State Medicaid Watch: Louisiana

A 25 percent cut in pay for nurses, physical therapists and others who care for disabled infants and toddlers started Tuesday under emergency cost-saving measures imposed by the Department of Health and Hospitals. The cuts are expected to save the state about $2.5 million in the fiscal year that ends June 30 in the Early Steps program, which provides therapy for children younger than 3 who have a disability or delayed development.
A health department spokesman said the cuts are necessary because the $28 million program is growing far more quickly than expected.
